Later on, met US general Consul Denis Hearne and his band of minders and press people.  Got a very warm welcome in the embassy, once I got past the queues of visa applicants, and some much needed very strong coffee.  Good interview.  The yanks have a very positive impression of the UPP process, and a strong respect for Jose Beltrame, head of public security here.  Have asked them to help me get in touch with his people; to let Beltrame know I’m in town, and what I am doing here.  Getting to him through official lines is proving slow as Christmas.  Hearne reckons Beltrame would be interested in my documentary if he knew about it.  Fingers crossed.

Will visit English course being run by the US consulate in Providencia, Rio’s first favela later on today.
